Re: Comparing text fonts (Operatic Score)

My opinion as a thickness queen is that Carrig's thickness is fine for everything but lyrics, which naturally require thicker typefaces in order to stand out properly against the music and remain readable at small type sizes. Have you considered Carrig for everything but lyrics and Vollkorn for lyr...

Re: Comparing text fonts (Operatic Score)

I think the thin font shouldn't be too much of an issue, especially since the singer will have to memorise the score. But, nevertheless, I agree with you re the orchestral parts and lighting, Here's the copy of the score using Vollkorn. Opera (pg57 - vollkorn).pdf I still prefer the Carrig; here's a...

Re: Comparing text fonts (Operatic Score)

It has appearance of being punched and thus handmade uneven, so having a very sharp font along with it is very unbalanced. In all cases, Arial, Old Standard and Centabel - in my opinion - is not working well with November. I agree with you that because the November music font is designed to have th...

Re: Comparing text fonts (Operatic Score)

It is clear now after changing to the November2 music font (Thank you so much for your awesome work, Richard P.!), the arial version now doesn't suit the music font: Opera (pg57 - arial).pdf Therefore I agree with everyone here that a serif font should be used. I think I will, therefore, go for the ...

Re: Comparing text fonts (Operatic Score)

If you work as a music teacher in a class it is a great opportunity to test this! Report back: I printed out both pages (in A3) and asked some composers, pianists, violinists and a conductor on which ones they prefer. The preference was pretty even. Those who preferred the arial (sans serif) exampl...

Re: Comparing text fonts (Operatic Score)

Hi OCTO

Thanks for the great advice. I will take a look at those fonts in addition to the ones I'm already considering and will see how they look in the 'real world' i.e. on printed parts/scores on stands. I think sometimes one forgets about that! :)

Re: Comparing text fonts (Operatic Score)

Do you have any other fonts that you could suggest that I should try to find the balance between clarity and readability, or do you think I should just stick to arial? Why „balance between clarity and readability“? Most serif fonts that are made for long texts are well readable and clear. Hi MalteM...

Re: Comparing text fonts (Operatic Score)

OCTO, Thank you so much for your feedback. I read the thread on text fonts (sans serif vs serif) and I do agree that serif fonts can be easier to read and they should be the least distracting as possible. Do you have any other fonts that you could suggest that I should try to find the balance betwee...

Comparing text fonts (Operatic Score)

Dear all I am new to this (awesome!) forum and this is my debut in sharing my engraving. I am a composer currently writing an opera. I recently discovered Richard Pichaud's November2 font, which I am eagerly wanting to acquire. For now, I am engraving on Dorico using the default Bravura music font. ...
