Hyphens for compound words

Hello, everyone
I am having trouble figuring out how to adequately show a hyphenated compound word, like "storm-clouds" for example. Do I just use the regular syllabic division hyphen and drag the words closer together? I happen to you Dorico, but this is not software-dependent. I just need to know how to show it. I consulted Elaine Gould's Behind Bars, but it is not clearly explained (p. 441).
Thank you in advance for any input.
