Hi, I'm looking for the correct idiomatic French terminology to use for technique instructions in a vibraphone part, specifically:
  • motor off
  • motor on
  • motor on, slow
  • motor on, fast
Thanks for any assistance!

What about: sans motour/sans vibrato; avec moteur/avec vibrato; vibrato lent; vibrato rapide? But I think English would be OK, as most of the percussion "vocabulary" is in English (mallets etc.).

In these case, I use the following:
  • sans moteur
  • avec moteur
  • avec moteur, vitesse lente / or shorter: moteur, vit. lente
  • avec moteur, vitesse rapide / or shorter: moteur, vit. rapide

I suspect that "moteur lent" and "moteur rapide" would be equally understood (as well as shorter)

FWIW I see Boulez in his directions for the vibraphone refers to vibrato in various ways: thus sans vibrato, vibrato lent, vibrato normal, vibrato moyen and so on.

However, given that directions in English (including my own - see screenshot) usually refer to ‘motor on’ &c, a direct French translation of the English may be best.
