I tested Lilypond with Denemo, which is a different animal than Frescobaldi. I actually rather liked it, and if the competition had only been Sibelius I might have chosen Lilypond. But then I tried Dorico, and Dorico won.

I think that some programs (Adobe Acrobat?) let you choose whether to embed fonts when you make a PDF. I think that other programs (Dorico?) embed fonts in any case. I think Musescore limits (or used to limit) the fonts it uses so that users can trade files without needing to embed fonts.

addendum: I understand that guitar music is a niche, and not often covered in style manuals, but if anyone can point me to a manual with good coverage regarding guitar idiosyncracies, I'd be grateful!
