Re: Dorico slurs and beams
1. To me, the most glaring Dorico deficiency are the slurs, which have a strange contour with a long flat middle and the ends suddenly dipping down toward the noteheads. And the belly of the slur is too thin, so the slur doesn't catch the eye. Many have pointed this out since Dorico 1. However, wit...

Re: Incipit Question
Thanks for your reply. I also couldn't find anything in Gould, hence me outsourcing the question here. Your point that the line doesn't add any useful information is a good one. Personally I think it clutters the page. And I'm grateful you mention "ambitus". I knew that once upon a time, b...

Re: The biggest scandal in music publishing
I am asking for a good URTEXT edition of all of Scarlatti's sonatas for the same reasons that there are urtext editions of the keyboard music of Bach, Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann etc. Urtext editions (as opposed to critical editions) ALWAYS include fingering. I guess I am mistaken ...

Ambitus Question
Greetings all--
Question about best practice since I've seen both:
When an incipit is provided to indicate vocal range, is it best practice to connect the notes with a line or leave them separate? (See attachment)

Re: The biggest scandal in music publishing
I really can’t imagine why you’d need fingering markings in a scholarly edition unless they were placed there but the composer for specific figures. If anyone is seriously interested in having the complete works of Scarlatti, they are well-beyond editorial fingerings unless it has the specific aim o...

Re: Score with no dots!
Also a piece by a significant living composer from Peters, also dated 2002, which is the worst piece of engraving from a commercial publisher I've seen. All the ties are slurs!! The dynamics symbols are set in a text font, sometimes roman and sometimes italic (with no reason to the alternation). Th...
