Re: Flat slurs
Hi Wess, You did a fine job with this font, but the method of making flat slurs is extremely limited, both in the length and depth, but also in the thickness. To use this method limits the thickness of slurs to that determined by the font character. Increasing the font size in order to accommodate t...

Re: Spatial piece
It seems to me that there are two separate issues under consideration here" 1. Do extension lines look ugly and are they necessary. This is a purely subjective decision, and one cannot say that either is right or wrong. 2. Given that the decision has been made to use them, should they be used e...

Re: Flat slurs
Currently Finale has 5 control points (to control the shape of the slur) and a positioning point that moves the whole slur without positioning it. The positioning point in the centre adjusts the overall depth by moving both handles either side of it. If this 5th, central control point could be made ...

Re: Spatial piece
Using extension lines to show relative stopping places in unmeasured music is not unknown elsewhere. For example Philipe Manoury uses them in almost every piece. In fact he now uses it as the standard notation to show the duration of a note in unmeasured bars, even when they fill the bar. This adds ...

Re: Dynamics: the optical center
By default Finale puts the centre of the character in line with the left edge of the notehead. This is a bit far left, I think, but as I receive so many Finale files from composers who use the default, I've kinda got used to it as normal. My personal preference is to have the centre of the character...

Re: Dynamics: the optical center
In Knut's diagram I prefer what he calls Optical Centre point centred on the notehead for shorter dynamics (eg up to 3 characters perhaps). I've never rationalised this, placement has always beed instinctive for me. Especially when composers use dynamics with 6 or 7 characters, like, for example, sf...

Re: Spatial piece
The thing that is most noticeable negative point to me is the text centred on smart shapes. Personally I prefer 1. glissando rather than Glissando 2. I would use gliss. and gl. rather than glissando and gliss. Thus the shorter get means the shorter version will only be used on very short glissandi 3...

Re: 12/8 Question
quarter rests in ⅜? generally not, but some prefer to have quarter rests leading the beat (despite the rules for ¾ etc). This provides consistency with 6/8, 9/8, 12/8 etc.
