Re: one Dorico "Defect"

I don't think there's anything inherently ‘wrong’ in an absolute sense with having the Piccolo below the Flute(s) in a score. Ricordi full scores of Verdi and of most of Puccini place the Piccolo below the Flutes, as do some other full scores on my shelves from reputable publishers. However, it is i...

Re: harp gliss notation question

My choice would be to notate both starting octaves in full; but I don't know whether or not that is officially correct.

Re: A note in Rachmaninoff

Inconclusive I fear, but possibly a major chord (with an F :s ). It's not helped by the fact that that chord seems to distort here as does the chord in a similar place in the next bar (limitations of my rural Scottish broadband?). (OT on the subject of my slowish broadband, I was recently in London ...

Re: Scordatura conventions

… … …  More and more composers ask me to engrave their scores "in C". Trying to play the Devil's Advocate, I will concede that, if you have perfect pitch and read something that sounds different, it will annoy you. But that's what clef reading is for, right? I always circulate my full sco...

Re: Am I too picky? (and I'm not that experienced, but there are limits!)

… … …  The wavy line may be prevalent in trombone playing. Is that the case, David? Not necessarily, but it is readily understood. The reason I usually choose to use it is in case of just this situation. The straight line (in this case with arrow) is for the the progressive covering of the tube on ...

Re: Am I too picky? (and I'm not that experienced, but there are limits!)

… … … According to E. Gould, who shows almost all of her examples with straight lines, the wavy line may be a thing of the past.… … … This is from a much more recent piece of mine, trombone gliss indicated by a wavy line while the progress of wa-wa effects with Harmon mute is shown by a straight li...

Re: Am I too picky? (and I'm not that experienced, but there are limits!)

FWIW (maybe not much) for the trombone part of a piece I wrote long ago (begun and abandoned in 1962 and then returned to and completed in 1968) I used the wavy line for a glissando lasting the whole value of the first note and the straight line for a quick glissando at the end of the first note. He...

Re: unis/div question

I think the second version is unequivocally clear, the first possibly a little less so.

I'd add to that, that in my experience when there are two notes at once in a string section part, the immediate reaction is to divide it anyway, unless there is a clear direction non div..

Re: MuseScore 4 Beam Angles

Heavens! I am not a pro-engraver, but a composer and erstwhile (but no more: old age!) performer. I really dislike the Ross shallow and mixed beams, which I find visually irritating. On the other hand I like John's latest example.

I think you are in Italy, but if you have UK or Irish customers, the Scottish Music Centre (SMC) has a music printing and binding service that is very flexible https://www.scottishmusiccentre.com/copying-printing-binding Members (including me) get priority (or at least a discount) and sometimes ther...
