I’m a percussionist strictly in the hobbyist sense. My main instruments are brass and strings. The book itself is from the perspective of composing, orchestrating and arranging.

The next book will be on bowed orchestral strings, then brass, then winds.

Yes, I've noticed a certain casual looseness in some of the notation from way back when, I would guess in part because the performance styles were so well ingrained.

simile and sempre

Sometimes, based on experience, I don’t “trust” simile or sempre. Especially when they're supposed to apply for more than a few bars. So I’m tempted to just continue with the explicit notation for some things. Does anyone else here have doubts as to some musicians kind of fading out on the specifics...

Hey, thanks for asking. I began the main authoring in iBooks Author, and did it there for about 85% of the book, and then had to switch to Pages for the remainder because Apple discontinued iBooks Author and transferred that responsibility to Pages. Whatever else you do I think you need to get those wayward dots in the treble to vertically align with the lefthand dots. Check Gould page 64 for tie options.

John, The slant in bar 72 of your version is the least objectionable imv. My main issue, however, is the lack of stems on some of those 16th notes. In fact, although I don't like the more drastic slants of the original, I still prefer it overall since there is a least a little bit of a stem on the b...
