Re: First page of today's work

That looks like a PITA to work on! What was your basic set up? A base of 4 staves, each with 2 lines set to 7 spaces or something, plus other staves to be hidden or shown as needed?

Re: Algorithms of accidental spacings

Here's a example of a few bars of a Guy Lacour etude from the original Lephonse Leduc publication, Sibelius, and Finale: https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5740/22278998316_d8038af339_b.jpg (Beams are a little pixelated, but I figured a jpeg would be better than a PDF. Full PDF is below.) I scanned the ...

Re: Spacing proportions and settings

Honest question, do pianists not like to turn pages when both hands are resting? I know in orchestra work, it's a terrible idea to have the entire orchestra turning pages during a G.P. as it destroys the effect. Is it a similar thing with piano music? There are so many obvious page turns like that i...

Re: Algorithms of accidental spacings

I'll investigate a bit more tonight, but there is a definite difference between how Finale and Sibelius account for this. I believe Finale somehow incorporates the accidental into the spacing and Sibelius does not unless required to avoid a collision or minimum distance. I'll try to post some compar...

Re: Spacing proportions and settings

I'm going to disagree here. Using modern design principles, there have been scientific studies about how white space can increase legibility and comprehension. These have been related to text, but I think are applicable to music as well. Plates were expensive, certainly in comparison to today's meth...

Spacing proportions and settings

Vaughan wrote the following in John's "whole measure rest" thread: it becomes more difficult to read the music if the proportionality is extremely compromised. I thought it better to just start a new thread instead of derailing that one, but I'm wondering how many of you realized Sibelius ...

Re: Arnstein and the "whole measure rest"

Reading comprehension failure, LOL! I somehow thought you were referring to putting a 1 above a whole rest. For your first example, I totally agree as the half is the subdivision. I'm not a big fan of 8 sixteenths beamed together though. A complete break or at least a secondary beam break would help...

Re: Arnstein and the "whole measure rest"

His reasoning went thusly: the half and whole rests (I am going to use standard parlance from now on) are probably the symbols most easily confused with each other in musical notation. Even a pro who has had a bad day might need a little help: "Let's see, the whole rest is the heavy one that h...

Re: 12/8 Question

If I'm reading it correctly, I think Peter was saying the current "correct" method is X1 for the first bar, and Arnstein for the second. I'm on board with that, and even if I haven't been totally consistent with this in the past, I think I'll stick to that going forward.

Re: Muzitex - for music text

I've used a lot of those in the past and have friends that use some of the others. There was a period when I used Minion for years, but stopped as it became quite popular and I think I just got a little tired of seeing it. One of the problems as I see it is that we are sort of stuck with a set of ch...
