Re: Binding tricks

Also, we use acid-free paper that we get from a paper supplier. I can't remember the brand offhand, but I know the supplier gets it in flats of 25x38" that then get cut to create 8 sheets of 9.5x12.5" paper from each sheet without any waste. It used to be Nekoosa Solutions 100lb text weigh...

3. To attach a fold-out page, use good quality masking tape. This tape will hold up for years and never break through. 3M surgical paper tape also works well for taping in inserts, as well as general binding. It is non-acidic and makes a good hinge. I usually use acid free artist's tape, that you c...

Quarter rest design

As I've become accustomed to reading contemporary text typefaces that use larger open counters, I've found myself sort of annoyed by quarter rests that use a tiny open counter above the second staff line. Yes, they are an easily distinguishable and distinct character so there generally isn't any con...

Re: 12/8 Question

Did he ever formulate a text with all of these? If not, that might be something for you to consider. +1. An Arnstein style manual is something I would be interesting in having in my library. John, are you in touch with any other copyists from his shop? What about anyone from his estate? Obviously i...

Pencils for music

This is sort of related to OCTO's pencil engraving thread, but I thought I'd start another thread as not to derail his. Has anyone else tried the Palomino Blackwing pencils yet? Apparently they were a favorite of Copland, Bernstein, Sondheim, etc., but were discontinued some time ago. They sort of h...

Re: Pencil engraving - scores

I'd have to measure, but at first glance it appears all the 2/4 bars are almost all the same width. Just a guess, but I bet he used a ruler, drew in all the barlines first, giving the 2/4 bars approximately the same width and the 3/4 proportionally more, and then went back and filled in the music. T...

Re: Resized staff and symbol sizes

Many modern text fonts have different optical sizes – versions of a font dedicated to different ranges of point size. The versions for small, caption size text are generally heavier and with increased spacing compared to the versions for larger, display text. Yep, and I definitely try to use these ...

Re: Welcome

I noticed you posted a link to this forum over on the Finale forum. Did you post on Sibelius too? I invited a few copyists who primarily use Sibelius, but I didn't see a post over on the Sibelius forum.
