Re: Beethoven's dots after a barline
Thanks should go to John Ruggero for creating another thought-provoking thread that led us here! I was not aware of the post-barline augmentation dot of the past, and it made me think hard about why we do what we do today. The Beethoven and Mahler examples were excellent and musically meaningful; an...

Re: Beethoven's dots after a barline
The dotted quarters in the Mahler example are quite obvious and easy to read, for a musician above beginner's level. I can't believe that professional, and most likely very experienced, musicians in the film industry (or whatever similar venue) have difficulties sight-reading this. That's a reasona...

Re: Beethoven's dots after a barline
Oh my! I look at this type of notation and instantly understand what the composer wants. I also simultaneously want to shout that this notation is asking for a mistake when sight reading.
Such are the two minds of which we are cursed when we care about notation.

Re: Placement of the staccato on headless notes
I would speculate that this is because the program still “sees” a blank notehead character and places the staccato in relation to that. Also, I’d be willing to bet that this is a case which was not considered by programmers because it is quite rare. If it was considered, I’m sure it was placed rathe...

Re: Placement of the staccato on headless notes
Above the stem is the answer in this case. Without a notehead, the stem becomes the horizontal reference point for the eye.

Re: On the use of tablets and BT page turners
So to be clear, the musicians are bringing tablets, but the production is still printing and binding books and putting them on the stands?
In other words, the performers are not required to have their own tablets, correct?

Re: On the use of tablets and BT page turners
Three questions: - Does anybody have issues with reflected lights, glare, etc? - Who provides the iPads? Are the performers required to bring their own? - Is there any kind of a backup system if an iPad goes down? These have been the three issues that kept my jobs on paper. Personally, I don't have ...

Re: Not much talk about Sibelius
I’ve used Sibelius from time time, however, I still come back to Finale. With Finale I know that if there is some low-level tweak I want, I can find a way to do it. I’ve known a few other copyists in Los Angeles who started using Sibelius but eventually moved to Finale for similar reasons. That said...

Re: The best software for clearing up (notation) a freely performed MIDI
I find this type of work easiest in a DAW like Logic. A DAW will have far more options for manipulating MIDI. Then you can re-save the file and import into your notation program of choice. If it’s just defining beats, Pro Tools can work very well, and I use that regularly because I often receive Pro...
