Re: Lyrics: to uppercase or not to uppercase?
In looking through a little of the German lieder repertoire, I see both systems being used. If one were not capitalizing initial words, supplying the poem in its original layout might be a good idea.

Re: Gould's Repeat Mark-Clef Rule
Neera, could you show some examples? I'm not sure what you mean.

Re: Gould's Repeat Mark-Clef Rule
Thanks for confirming that, David and Neera. Yes, since a repeat mark can be placed in the middle of a measure, it is clearly not a bar line per se. Neera, your point is also very interesting. When a repeat mark coincides with a double bar line, the double bar line may have an extra meaning that cou...

Re: Gould's Repeat Mark-Clef Rule
No problem. (Do people still say that?) Neera, have you ever seen the Gould-Dorico style (as described above) in fine editions? I would love to know where this came from. In thinking about it further I am wondering if it comes from a misunderstanding of the point I made above. A repeat mark replaces...

Another Beethoven centered beam
This one comes from the first movement of the Sonata op. 28: Beethoven op 28.1 MS.png In this case, Beethoven uses the centered beam to preserve normal stem direction for the three notes involved. But not to obey "the rules". He does it because he wants the stem direction to stay the same ...

Re: Gould's Repeat Mark-Clef Rule
That may be, Neera, but the subject of the thread is putting a clef change after a double repeat that occurs in the middle of a staff.

Re: Gould's Repeat Mark-Clef Rule
Hi, FredGUnn. We meet again. :) Yes, I just gave several examples in the posts above of mid-measure double repeat signs and how the clef falls after the repeat mark. Imagine how bad those would look if the Gould-Dorico system were applied. The way I understand it is: A repeat mark substitutes for a ...

Re: Placement of tuplets
Yes, the single-note in the measure issue. Thanks for bringing that one up. Then there is the bad position of the stem-side two-note slur. If I had a dollar for each one of those... I agree completely that tuplet brackets are necessary in complex contemporary music. However, I also think that they a...

Re: Gould's Repeat Mark-Clef Rule
Thanks, Shinohara Hoshi. This just came up again over at the Dorico forum, so I thought I should post here because I don't think that it's been discussed here. I am interested in knowing whether Gould based this rule on a tradition that I've never encountered. But it is clear that software should be...

Re: Placement of tuplets
Here is an example of how music customs do not always improve. The first example is from the first movement of the first edition of Beethoven's Sonata op. 31 no. 1. One sees he dramatic peaks and valleys of the music as if it were mountain range: Beethoven op 31 no 1 Naegeli .png This wonderful pict...
