Re: Ossia: Finale versus Dorico

I find ossias in Dorico to be incredibly easy. If you want the clef, just add it. If you want any sort of label, there's a setting in Layout Options / Ossias and Extra Staves.

Re: Scordatura conventions

More and more composers ask me to engrave their scores "in C". All of the composers I've worked with that came up in the pre-computer era have always written transposed scores. This is at least partially due to the fact that there was a 50% premium (under the NYC Local 802 contract anyway...

I'm pretty sure Subito can do it and I've worked with them on projects before (although quite some years ago):

I've heard good things about Black Ribbon too, but don't have any personal experience:

I forgot there was a notational key in the back. The composer himself calls it "portamento."

Re: Am I too picky? (and I'm not that experienced, but there are limits!)

For example, someone argued that a straight line gliss was different from a wavy line gliss in actual performance. This is pure horse-pucky. They are simply different notation conventions from different periods in time for the exact same performance technique. They are often different for wind play...

Re: mercato and staccato

The question I need to ask is, how does a relatively uneducated writer figure out what is definitive? Seems to me, that my solution, marcato and staccato, is unambiguous, which is more than I can say for google. It will be played fine, it just sort of announces that you are "a relatively unedu...

Re: mercato and staccato

I think JJP's assessment is spot on. Marcato combined with staccato in jazz is certainly uncommon and generally just unnecessary clutter. If you look through older hand copied parts, they usually are just presented like this: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52741054124_81f84dc8a7_o.png All of th...

Re: [ANN] Ten Music Notation Programs, second edition

I am not sure why this music was chosen to represent various notation principles in comparison. Just the first system of this music is enough, and not needed to be "repetitive" throughout the page. Maybe we can "compose" a piece that would include many different aspects of notat...

Re: [ANN] Ten Music Notation Programs, second edition

All those seem fair. I was trying to keep them aligned per voice across the bar, as a 6/8 bar isn't that long, but Gould says they only need to be aligned within a beat, so you're probably right.

Re: [ANN] Ten Music Notation Programs, second edition

I think it's tricky to get that exactly as they need to be adjusted in intervals of the arp glyph. It's not like a solid line that can easily have fixed endpoints and any length you want. Perhaps mine are a bit too long in the example above, but I usually err on the side of too long vs too short. Th...
