Re: Alignment of (double) whole notes

Here are a few examples I found of editions where whole notes are consistently center-aligned. Eustache du Caurroy, Fantasies, Editions musicales de la Schola Cantorum, Paris, 1960s: 2016-6-12 23.23.51.png Anton Bruckner, Orgelwerke, Doblinger, Vienna, 1970: 2016-6-12 23.23.16.png Pièces d'orgue de ...

Re: Alignment of (double) whole notes

Even though centered alignment appears more visually pleasing, I am having trouble finding actual examples of centered half notes over whole notes in the standard literature, either on the same staff or between staves. I have looked at German, French, and American editions in the public domain in v...

Re: Alignment of (double) whole notes

I think at this point it is important to consider a parallel problem in word typesetting. Perhaps you do not see center aligned notes of this kind because of the same reasons you don't see books typeset in center justification: it's just hard to read over and over. Center justification being nice f...

Re: Alignment of (double) whole notes

Ha! So MuseScore is centering the double whole note and the half note. I like how that looks.
But how does MuseScore align a double whole note and a whole note; and whole note and a half note? Left-aligned or centered?

Re: Alignment of (double) whole notes

It was the alignment of double whole notes in particular that prompted me to open this thread. I could now draw these conclusions: If we assume that whole notes and smaller values are left-aligned (as seems to be the norm these days), then a good alignment of double whole notes is somewhat dependent...

Re: spin-off from: [puzzle] Two voices in one staff

The open-tie solution by Knut looks indeed quite attractive in this particular context.
I don't usually like such open ties, but maybe that is more because often, when open ties are being used, they are being over-used without a real need for them.
But here they would serve a good purpose.

Re: spin-off from: [puzzle] Two voices in one staff

That looks like a possible alternative, John. I had in fact also tried to put the D flat tie above, but then it had to cross through all of the three other ties. It didn't occur to me to draw one of the longer ties under (through the stems of the lower voice). There was also another issue, though - ...

Alignment of (double) whole notes

In most if not all music fonts, the whole and double whole noteheads are wider than the noteheads of smaller note values. What is then the correct vertical alignment of whole notes and double whole notes against simultaneous smaller note values? In hand-copied (not engraved) music, where there is so...

Re: spin-off from: [puzzle] Two voices in one staff

Thank you, OCTO. And of course, I meant to write "tie", not slur.

spin-off from: [puzzle] Two voices in one staff

The "two voices in one staff" puzzle by OCTO reminded me of a similar situation I encountered recently: here, too, the tie placement was problematic. Below you can see the best I could come up with. But I really dislike the tie between the high D flats being so far away from the noteheads....
