I agree with you, but I wonder if that is because only serious engravers still use it. In other words it may be the expertise of the person using the software rather than the software itself. Still, it's amazing that such a great result is accomplished with software from almost 50 years ago (see the recent critical edition of Ives' Fourth Symphony) and even more amazing that no-one seems capable of reproducing that today.
BTW, I have also seen some not-so-great engraving done with SCORE. I could give examples, but i won't...
