Hi all,
I need some advice about whether or not to subdivide the beaming in the final crotchet beat of my 4/4 bar.
I had a look at Gould p.154, but I'm still not quite sure whether I should subdivide it or not.

Re: Should I subdivide the beaming?
On page 154 Gould seems to advocate showing the beats with the beaming, so I am guessing that in your case, it would depend on whether your are counting in quarter and thus use your first version, or eighth note beats, and thus use the second. However, I would use the first version in either case since I think such secondary beam breaks hamper the visual flow of the melody.

Ah I see. If I remember correctly, the conductor beats quarter notes here, so I'll take your advice and beam it as in the first version.
Thanks as always!

Another vote for the first version. The second version may cause a reader to incorrectly perceive an eighth note because of the single beam. (I am assuming the meter is 4/4.)
There is no computer problem so complex that it cannot be solved by a sledge hammer.
