I was just thinking in terms of yarn-wrapped round mallets, and the hard plastic ones (like a SuperBall at the end of a stick.)

The percussionist Nebojsa Jovan Zivkovic has advised me to write just "beater"; in almost all cases you are leaving it to the performer, or in doubt.
