I'm away from home at present, and if things go to plan, not due back until about 8 December. I hope to make my first tentative beginning with Dorico (which is duly downloaded and installed) soon after my return. What you tell me about Dorico and cautionary accidentals is very helpful.

it looks like our indentations are almost identical.

Dorico does, by default, create an indented first system with enough space to permit the longest instrument names.
Although I've had a few instances where an instrument name was simply ridiculously long and Dorico refused to budge past a certain point.

Which I guess would put to rest my life-long dream of engraving some PDQ Bach?

I tend to use 5-6 spaces indent in my scores, regardless of ensemble.
Orchestral scores do not use this, rather use full staff labels in the first system of each movement, which substitutes the need for a dedicated indent.
