I always wondered why a timpanist earns more than a tutti violinist, who often plays far more notes in a concert.  But when you think about the level of responsibility involved, it is actually very very scary!

Imagine playing the cymbals in Dvořáks 9th symphony. And then missing your cue by half a measure. Happened to me once, won’t ever forget.

Later French style cuing system without rests and additional labeling for each entrance of the playing part, perhaps because this was a new approach.

Arnstein always provided a cue in the first measure of a piece for all the instruments that were not playing.
