Hello, everyone
I am having trouble figuring out how to adequately show a hyphenated compound word, like "storm-clouds" for example. Do I just use the regular syllabic division hyphen and drag the words closer together? I happen to you Dorico, but this is not software-dependent. I just need to know how to show it. I consulted Elaine Gould's Behind Bars, but it is not clearly explained (p. 441).
Thank you in advance for any input.
Hyphens for compound words
Re: Hyphens for compound words
A hyphenated word isn’t treated any different than hyphenated syllables. So, it would be storm - clouds on separate notes with the hyphen between.

Re: Hyphens for compound words
I've seen older editions use low-line dashes for hyphenated syllables and mid-line for the hyphen between compound words (and also mid-line to show em-dashes). I don't think it's an ideal solution but an alternative to think about.
Re: Hyphens for compound words
Yes, I'd agree: just do this:
Essentially no different from "stormclouds" as one word on two notes.
