Dynamics (probably stupid question)

Post by MichelRE »

I'm working on the score of a single movement that is sub-divided into sections, played without pause, but the score does place double barlines at each new section (not "final" barlines, just regular thin double lines.)

one passage ends :forte after a crescendo. double barline, then the next section SOME of the instruments start a few beats later, again :forte . (big climax starting, everyone is banging away on their instruments)

Should I repeat the dynamic or not? It seems a bit strange to my eye to have the :forte twice, but then, it also looks incomplete without it.

On the principle that it can do no harm and might do some good, I would repeat the :forte.
Finale 26.3.1 & 27.4 Dorico 5.1.81 waiting but not yet in use
Mac 11.7.10 & 15.4.1

thanks.

In the interim after posting my question, I went back to the score and added the dynamic, and yes, it actually looks more clear this way. As in "yes! this music is still fricken' loud!"

it also allowed me to remove an extraneous text expression I had added at one point, which I now find redundant. (I had added "sonore" - in French - because I wanted to clarify that this part was meant to be broad and dramatic)

If it is not a "tautology", as David suggested, just use again "f"—it will not make more damage!
