Measure numbers in art songs (did a google search)

Post by MichelRE »

I decided to try a google search for the following question:

"do you include measure numbers in art songs?"

The very first thing at the top of the results page was an AI generated series of answers.
Yes, measure numbers are typically included in art songs and other pieces of music:

When to include
Measure numbers are usually placed at the beginning of each system, at structural points, and at rehearsal landmarks. They can also be included at barlines after multi-measure rests and throughout the part, especially towards the right side of systems.

How to include
Measure numbers are best indicated in a larger font and/or in an enclosure.

Why to include
Consistent measure numbering is important because it helps groups start at the most efficient place and prevents them from having to deal with multiple counting systems.
I was most curious about the 2nd response. Gould does not suggest enclosures, nor larger fonts.
However, she DOES suggest Italic rather than Roman font.

How do you feel about this AI generated answer?

The first thing I would like to ask is to define "art song", what is that?

It's a slightly awkward term, but Art Songs are usually understood to mean songs for solo voice and piano suitable for classically trained singers, much the same as German Lieder or French Mélodies. The term can also cover vocal duets with piano and even trios ditto. Something which is positively operatic or from musical theatre might not normally be classed as Art Song.

As for the original question, I would include bar numbers at the beginning of each system in an italic font large enough to be clear for both singers and pianist, but not so large as to be obtrusive (I think I usually choose two points larger than the software default). As for the AI generated answer, it seems a bit confused. Large fonts, enclosures &c might be obtrusive.
