Hmmm... John, voices should be swapped.
Btw, this is an example from a friend's score I saw yesterday.
Intereating to see what solution could be best. I have problem with the slur.

I tried it at first also with voices swapped and definitely didn't like it. The primary voice should have stems up because the octaves are so low on the staff. Had they been higher, I would agree with you.

What do you think about this?
In situations like this, the spacing must be corrected to achieve a better output.

That would depend on the context, wouldn't it?John Ruggero wrote:The primary voice should have stems up because the octaves are so low on the staff. Had they been higher, I would agree with you.
You could do something like this:
But I think I like OCTO's version better, at least if the tie went clear of the upper staff line.
Re: [puzzle] Two voices in one staff
Another option would be to use open ties:

Sorry. My error. I didn't take OCTO's "voice 1" to mean "primary voice" for some reason; probably because it didn't seem to be. If the moving voice is the secondary voice then your and OCTO's stemming is, of course, the correct solution. That would depend on the context, wouldn't it?

I like OCTO's best.
I think it is because subconsciously, I'm tempted to think and forget and possibly confuse the versions which are so tidy, and avoid collisions with notes in the middle of the staff.
Even though it is a bit more spaced out, I think it speaks for itself without much minutiae of conflicts.

Now that I actually understand what is wanted, here is my corrected version. I think that running the tie through the sharp would be acceptable in extreme cases like this. Putting a tie over the top as in OCTO's includes other notes and thus appears to be a slur and would be confusing.
