Dvorak Cello Concerto publication
Hi all,
Here's a short video that was posted last week by Henle. Stephen Isserlis discusses his contribution to Henle's new Urtext publication of Dvorak's Cello Concerto. Just thought this might be of interest in regard to the publishing of fingerings, ossias, bowing, etc.

Best,
Hector.

Re: Dvorak Cello Concerto publication
Thank you for drawing our attention to this.
I was especially interested to hear Steven's comments on a few very modest practical edits he makes himself in performance but which are NOT printed in the new edition.

From the previews available on the website, my very high respect for Henle's engraving practices got a strong hit.
Besides, I am a cellist so that means I have my memory going through all other editions while looking at it.

I don't understand the beam angles Henle is using in their new publications. It looks like the max slope for any beam is 1/2 space. Does anyone know someone on staff there? I would be very curious to hear why they have made that decision. It looks quite odd to me.
Re: Dvorak Cello Concerto publication
It does seem to be a modern trend towards completely avoiding 'staff-line hypotenuse'.

It does make life a lot easier for the engraver, although not for the player.

Re: Dvorak Cello Concerto publication
Along with the beam angles, the slur and tie shapes continue to be strange. This edition has flattened out the middle of medium length slurs that one normally never sees flattened, but if they hadn't been flattened they would have been too arched. If this was done in Finale, it took effort to the take the very beautifully-shaped slurs that Finale produces automatically into these robotic-looking slurs and tie:
The score is available for inspection at:

And I just noticed the needlessly mismatched position of the swell hairpins. What? The score is available for inspection at:

Re: Dvorak Cello Concerto publication
Just to clarify, you mean your respect for Henle editing took a hit in the negative sense?

Is there a positive sense?

Heh. Well, I’m a bit to young for those days, but “take another hit” used to have a certain other meaning.
